For evolutionary developments we take the existing
product as a basis and look to research incremental improvements
in key aspects to reach the desired goal. This tends to reduce
the impact of problems or failures whilst allowing parallelisation
of effort.
Revolution
To create a revolution in product capability we seek
to use techniques such as TRIZ to solve inherent contradictions
in the existing product capability - focused in the desired
direction. These novel concepts are then tested and researched
in the normal way. this engineering of innovation is more
targeted than our usual research management techniques, with
a focus on the short term.
Benefits
Our new product research offering marries real R&D effort
to a targeted short term aim. Although progress tends to be
more constrained in this method, the short term targeted nature
can provide a better fit to the needs of some business customers.
However the drivers of this work tends to ensure that only
particular researchers are able to match the particular needs.
